About The Course:

Thirty-two-year-old Donna was struck by a vehicle on the highway when she was riding her motorcycle. She has suffered abrasions to her face, chest and extremities. EMS find her in a critical state and request a helicopter to help transfer Donna to a trauma center. En route the patient is reported to be unresponsive with several injuries.

This VR simulation open scenario is designed to help learners manage a critically ill trauma case and prepare the patient for an air ambulance transport.

  • Performing and managing life threats during the MARCH assessment
  • Managing and appropriately securing an endotracheal tube in a patient with physiologic derangement
  • Appropriately preparing and monitoring a patient for helicopter transport

Managing Critically Ill Trauma Patient

As part of this multiplayer open scenario, the learner will secure the injured patient by applying a C-collar, pelvic binder and a tourniquet on the left leg to control the bleeding. In the helicopter, the learner will place an IV access and a blood bag. Additionally, a nasal cannula will be placed and the patient will be intubated, followed by placing a Thomas Tube holder.
This scenario is set in a photorealistic environment and all necessary affordances are made available to assist learners in performing their tasks with efficiency and effectiveness.

Debriefing

End-of-task debriefing to assess one’s performance, evaluate actions, and get the most out of the training. Examples of topics being touched upon in the debriefing include the following:

  • Thorough patient assessment
  • Completion of necessary steps
  • Correct medication administration to patient
  • Sequential completion of task
  • Execution of time-sensitive tasks
