About The Course:

This is a 29-year-old female patient who is here for a pilonidal abscess removal. The abscess is on her upper right buttock, and she has been given conscious sedation for the drainage procedure.

This VR simulation for Pilonidal Abscess Removal is designed to help healthcare providers practice the procedure of abscess drainage with a virtual patient in a safe and controlled environment. With both training and assessment modes, learners can perform the procedure and assess themselves on their performance.

Learning Objectives:
  • Following clinically approved preoperative protocols
  • Effectively executing the procedure for abscess incision and drainage
  • Applying postoperative care and dressing

Core Skills Training

Performing Pilonidal Abscess Removal

As a part of this Pilonidal Abscess Removal procedure, the learner will begin by sterilizing the surgical area and draping it with a surgical drape. After donning sterile gloves, lidocaine will be injected into the surgical site. Using a scalpel, a vertical incision will be made in the area maximum fluctuance followed by inserting and expanding a surgical clamp to break up adhesions. Finally, the learner will express purulent fluid from the abscess and apply Tegaderm dressing to the treated area.
All necessary affordances are provided to complete the procedure with efficiency.

Training

With prompts, guidance and affordances learners are hand-held through the process to practice the procedure in a virtual environment with a virtual patient.

  • Photorealistic virtual environment
  • Physics-based interactions
  • Detailed instructions
  • Adequate affordances to assist in task completion

Assessment

Test acquired skills to perform the procedures from start to finish without prompts. An incorrect step will take the learner back to the start to start afresh.

  • Live scoring
  • Instant feedback
  • Adequate affordances for efficient performance
  • Time tracking to monitor activity completion
