Subcutaneous Injection
Francisco Martinez is 72-years-old and afflicted with rheumatoid arthritis. He is visiting for an Enbrel shot that his doctor has prescribed him. This is a subcutaneous injection that has to be administered somewhere on the back of the arm, inner thigh or abdomen area. As a healthcare practitioner your job is to not only administer the injection but also educate the patient on what to expect from the injection and its possible side effects.
This Subcutaneous Injection VR simulation is designed to help healthcare practitioners practice administering the injection and educating the patient about the injection. Both training and assessment modes are available that help practice the skill and assess the skills acquired.
- Demonstrate knowledge of different subcutaneous injection sites
- Apply clinically approved technique to administer subcutaneous injection
- Educate patient on proper aftercare instructions

Core Skills Training
Subcutaneous Injection
In this VR simulation, the learner will begin the procedure by confirming the identity of the patient. Further, the patient will have to be informed about the injection being administered, its location, and the side effects that may or may not follow. The learner will also enquire about the patient’s medical history, allergies, and vaccine status to rule out complications or drug interactions. The patient will have to be informed of the symptoms to look for post-injection and when to contact the healthcare facility. Having completed all preparatory requirements, the user will administer the injection.
Training
With prompts, guidance and affordances learners are hand-held through the process to practice the procedure in a virtual environment with a virtual patient.
- Photorealistic virtual environment
- Physics-based interactions
- Detailed instructions
- Adequate affordances to assist in task completion
Assessment
Test acquired skills to perform the procedures from start to finish without prompts. An incorrect step will take the learner back to the start to start afresh.
- Live scoring
- Instant feedback
- Adequate affordances for efficient performance
- Time tracking to monitor activity completion
