About The Course:

Sixty-eight-year-old Carolina Bell has been facing difficulty in oral intake of nutrition. Her doctor has ordered some IV nutrition. Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) will be administered to Central line access for this purpose.

This VR simulation for TPN administration is designed to help healthcare practitioners practice the procedure with a virtual patient in a safe and controlled virtual environment. With both training and assessment modes, learners can perform the procedure and assess themselves on their performance.

Learning Objectives:
  • Accurately validate TPN bag medication label and computerized medication order
  • Evaluate TPN bag for integrity of solution and appropriate labeling
  • Demonstrate standard aseptic technique when spiking the TPN bag and priming the IV tubing
  • Demonstrate the process of setting up an infusion pump for TPN administration
  • Demonstrate standard technique for flushing the central line access with saline solution prior to TPN administration
  • Demonstrate standard aseptic technique when connecting IV tubing to the patient’s central line access

Core Skills Training

TPN Administration

As a part of this TPN administration procedure, the user will begin by confirming the patient’s name and date of birth and enquiring about any known allergies. The learner will then inform the patient of the procedure and proceed with verifying the medication order and inspect the TPN bag. Further steps will require the learner to spike and prime the IV tubing with the TPN solution, program the IV pump, clean and flush the distal needleless port of central line and document the procedure.
All necessary affordances are provided to complete the procedure with efficiency.

With prompts, guidance and affordances learners are hand-held through the process to practice the procedure in a virtual environment with a virtual patient.
