About The Course:

Sixty-year-old John Spencer presents with a small but noticeable lesion on his right forearm, requiring a biopsy for comprehensive evaluation and diagnosis. The ideal method in this situation is the use of punch biopsy.

This VR simulation for Punch Biopsy is designed to help practitioners practice the procedure in a safe and controlled virtual environment with a virtual patient. With both training and assessment modes, learners can perform the procedure and assess themselves on their performance.

Learning Objectives:
  • Demonstrating sterile prep and draping for punch biopsy
  • Demonstrating use of punch biopsy instrument

Core Skills Training

punch biopsy

Performing Punch Biopsy

As a part of this Punch Biopsy procedure, the learner will begin by confirming the identity of the patient and getting consent for the biopsy. After performing hand sanitization, the learner will clean and mark the biopsy region and prepare a syringe with lidocaine. Having anesthetized the region, a punch biopsy and Adson forceps will be used to obtain the sample. The biopsy sample will be placed in the sample container and the site sutured. The procedure will be complete after applying a band-aid over the wound.
All necessary affordances are provided to complete the procedure with efficiency.

Training

With prompts, guidance and affordances learners are hand-held through the process to practice the procedure in a virtual environment with a virtual patient.

  • Photorealistic virtual environment
  • Physics-based interactions
  • Detailed instructions
  • Adequate affordances to assist in task completion

Assessment

Test acquired skills to perform the procedures from start to finish without prompts. An incorrect step will take the learner back to the start to start afresh.

  • Live scoring
  • Instant feedback
  • Adequate affordances for efficient performance
  • Time tracking to monitor activity completion
