Urinary Catheter Insertion – Male
Seventy-year-old James Smith’s doctor has ordered a urinary catheter insertion. There is a need to adjust James’ Lasix medication which requires an accurate urine output, hence the procedure.
This VR simulation for Urinary Catheter Insertion is designed to help practitioners practice performing the procedure with skill and efficiency, while taking extreme care of patient comfort. With both training and assessment modes, learners can perform the procedure and assess themselves on their performance.
- Setting up catheter kit and maintaining a sterile field
- Cleansing the penis using aseptic technique
- Inserting a catheter using standard techniques
- Securing the catheter and placing the drainage bag
- Educating the patient on proper aftercare instructions

Core Skills Training

Inserting Urinary Catheter - Male
As a part of this Urinary Catheter Insertion procedure, the learner will begin by confirming the patient’s identity, enquiring about any known allergies and informing the patient on what to expect during the procedure. The learner will then proceed with performing necessary cleansing tasks of the penis and its surrounding areas to prevent infections. A sterile field will be created to keep any kind of contamination at bay. Taking all necessary precautions the catheter will be inserted in the penis and finally secured using the securement device and a drainage bag placed appropriately. The procedure concludes with the learner, once again, performing hand hygiene. All necessary affordances a provided to complete the procedure with efficiency.
Training
With prompts, guidance and affordances learners are hand-held through the process to practice the procedure in a virtual environment with a virtual patient.
- Photorealistic virtual environment
- Physics-based interactions
- Detailed instructions
- Adequate affordances to assist in task completion

Assessment
Test acquired skills to perform the procedures from start to finish without prompts. An incorrect step will take the learner back to the start to start afresh.
- Live scoring
- Instant feedback
- Adequate affordances for efficient performance
- Time tracking to monitor activity completion
