Introduction to NRP Equipment
This simulation is designed to introduce learners to the essential NRP equipment used in a neonatal resuscitation procedure. The focus is on familiarization and correct handling of each tool, ensuring healthcare providers can recognize, set up, and confirm functionality of all items needed in neonatal emergencies.
Designed for physicians, nurses, and respiratory therapists at both novice and expert levels, the Introduction to NRP Equipment simulation provides a structured walkthrough of resuscitation equipment helping learners practice inspect, assemble, and identify the purpose of each device in preparation for clinical use.
- Identifying and describing the function of core NRP equipment
- Inspecting neonatal monitoring devices (cardiac monitor, pulse oximeter, temperature probe, BP cuff)
- Demonstrating the use of airway management tools (PPV device, laryngoscope, suction devices, ETT)
- Identifying and preparing thermal support equipment (baby warmer, thermal mattress, NeoGuard, blankets)
- Identifying emergency medication delivery equipment (UVC tray, epinephrine syringes, umbilical catheter)
- Demonstrating safe setup and readiness checks for each piece of equipment

NRP Equipment Inspection
As part of the simulation, learners are guided through the inspection of key neonatal resuscitation equipment. The process emphasizes hands-on interaction and recognition, allowing learners to:
1. Inspect Monitoring Devices – cardiac/respiratory monitor, temperature sensors, BP cuffs, and pulse oximeter.
2. Review Airway Tools – laryngoscope, ETT, PPV devices, suction systems (bulb syringe, DeLee catheter, suction tubing).
3. Examine Thermal Support Tools – baby warmer, thermal mattress, NeoGuard, and supporting items such as hats and blankets.
4. Inspect Medication & Access Equipment – prefilled epinephrine syringes, UVC tray, umbilical clamps, and dosage calculation references.
5. Confirm Setup & Safety – ensuring equipment is functional, properly prepared, and safely stored for rapid access.
All essential equipment is presented in a fully interactive virtual environment, enabling learners to practice step-by-step inspection and setup in accordance with NRP standards.
Training
With prompts, guidance and affordances learners are hand-held through the process to practice the procedure in a virtual environment with a virtual patient. Â
- Photorealistic virtual environment Â
- Physics-based interactions Â
- Detailed instructions Â
- Adequate affordances to assist in task completion

Assessment
Test acquired skills to perform the procedures from start to finish without prompts. An incorrect step will take the learner back to the start to start afresh. Â
- Live scoring Â
- Instant feedback Â
- Adequate affordances for efficient performance Â
- Time tracking to monitor activity completion
