Driven by curiosity and with a mission to promote “learning through investigation, collaboration, and play,” EXPLO took a leap to include VR medical simulations in their summer curriculum. Partnering with MedVR Education, this program aimed at providing students an insight into the healthcare profession. It served as an introduction to those interested in the field by allowing them to be part of immersive VR simulations.
EXPLO has been at the forefront of organizing workshops and summer training programs to provide youngsters an opportunity to explore different professions and make informed judgments. Treading on this path, this summer they decided to give students a taste of what it is like to work as a healthcare worker. Strapping on headsets and stepping into the world of virtual reality, participants were exposed to scenarios in which they got to perform procedures, diagnose patients, and manage critical cases. As Adam Lavallee, Dean of Studies for EXPLO Pre-College said, the MedVR Education tool allowed “students to have even more practice and test their skills.”
All MedVR Education scenarios replicate real-life situations so when participants stepped in the immersive virtual environment, they found themselves in scenarios that imitated the real-world. They got to use equipment as one would in a healthcare set up. For some this might have been the first encounter with virtual reality, making this experience exclusively fascinating and intriguing.
The organizers of this program had been considering exposing their high school students to the field of healthcare and its various facets. Impressed with the simulations created at MedVR Education, they took this as an opportunity to take this move to fruition.
There are bound to be students who would be considering a career in medicine and healthcare. However, thinking about something and practically trying it out can make a world of difference. It is quite likely that someone who hasn’t fancied this career path may get interested in it by participating and practically performing procedures. The need is to expose learners to the practical aspect of the job and let them decide for themselves what path they would like to proceed on.
The organizers found VR simulations as an effective means of exposing their students to medical training and the excitement and enthusiasm among participants proved their move to be a positive one.
