Assist Male Patient to Use Urinal
Fifty-two-year-old male patient Jackson Collier requires assistance using a urinal due to limited mobility from a right arm cast and an IV line in the opposite hand. Providing safe, respectful, and hygienic assistance is essential to maintain patient dignity, prevent spills, and ensure accurate urine output measurement.
This VR simulation offers learners a realistic, immersive opportunity to practice assisting a male patient with urinal use in a controlled clinical environment. Learners progress through patient identification, communication, positioning, urinal placement, urine measurement, disposal, and documentation while following standard infection control practices.
The module includes both training and assessment modes to reinforce correct sequencing, proper technique, and patient-centered communication during routine bedside care.
- Preparing the patient and environment while maintaining privacy and dignity
- Performing proper hand hygiene and PPE use prior to patient care
- Positioning the patient and urinal correctly to prevent spills
- Assisting with correct placement of the penis into the urinal
- Measuring and disposing of urine output accurately
- Providing patient aftercare, comfort, and education
- Documenting urine output and completing post-care procedures

Core Skills Training
Performing Assistance with Male Urinal Use
As part of this procedure, the learner begins by responding to the patient call light, verifying patient identity, and explaining the procedure. After performing hand hygiene and donning gloves, the learner positions the bed and patient appropriately to promote comfort and safety. The learner places the urinal correctly between the patient’s legs, assists with proper positioning of the penis to avoid spills, and supports the patient throughout the process while maintaining dignity and privacy. Once voiding is complete, the learner cleans the patient, measures urine output at eye level, disposes of the urine safely, and documents findings accurately before completing hand hygiene.
Training
With prompts, guidance, and affordances, learners are guided step-by-step through assisting a male patient with urinal use in a virtual patient care setting.
- Photorealistic hospital room environment
- Physics-based object interaction (bed, urinal, linens)
- Guided instructions and visual cues
- Affordances to support correct positioning and sequencing
Assessment
Learners demonstrate independent performance of the procedure from start to finish without prompts. Incorrect steps require the learner to restart and perform the task correctly.
- Live scoring
- Instant feedback
- Sequence and technique validation
- Time tracking for task completion
