Assist Patient with a Bedpan
Seventy-four-year-old female patient Rosalyn Harris requires assistance using a bedpan due to vertigo and fall risk, which prevents her from safely getting out of bed. Providing safe, respectful, and hygienic assistance is essential to maintain patient dignity, prevent injury, and ensure proper elimination care.
This VR simulation provides learners with a realistic, immersive environment to practice assisting a patient with bedpan use in a controlled clinical setting. Learners progress through patient identification, communication, positioning, bedpan placement, perineal care, disposal, and documentation while following standard infection control and safety practices.
The module includes both training and assessment modes to reinforce correct sequencing, proper technique, patient safety, and compassionate, patient-centered communication during routine bedside care.
- Preparing the patient and environment while maintaining privacy and dignity
- Performing proper hand hygiene and appropriate PPE use
- Safely positioning and rolling the patient in bed
- Correctly placing and removing a bedpan without causing discomfort or spills
- Providing proper perineal care after elimination
- Disposing of waste safely using infection control standards
- Repositioning the patient for comfort and safety after the procedure
- Documenting care accurately and completing post-care procedures

Core Skills Training
Performing Assistance with Bedpan Use
As part of this procedure, the learner begins by responding to the patient call light, providing privacy, verifying patient identity, and explaining the procedure to obtain consent. After performing hand hygiene and donning gloves, the learner adjusts the bed height and positions the patient safely to reduce caregiver strain and patient discomfort. The learner assists the patient with rolling, places the bedpan correctly beneath the buttocks, and ensures proper positioning before allowing the patient privacy to void. After elimination, the learner safely removes the bedpan, provides perineal care, disposes of waste according to infection control protocols, repositions the patient for comfort, and documents the procedure accurately before completing hand hygiene.
Training
With prompts, guidance, and affordances, learners are guided step-by-step through assisting a patient with bedpan use in a virtual patient care environment.
- Photorealistic hospital room environment
- Physics-based object interaction (bed, urinal, linens)
- Guided instructions and visual cues
- Affordances to support correct positioning and sequencing
Assessment
Learners demonstrate independent performance of the procedure from start to finish without prompts. Incorrect steps require the learner to restart and complete the task correctly.
- Live scoring
- Instant feedback
- Sequence and technique validation
- Time tracking for task completion
