IUD Insertion – ParaGard
Stephanie Cruz is 31 years old and is here for a ParaGard insertion. ParaGard IUD insertion is a copper IUD that can prevent pregnancy for up to 10 years and is a preferred means of birth control by many women. It requires a healthcare professional to perform the insertion procedure.
This VR simulation for ParaGard IUD insertion is designed to help healthcare practitioners practice the procedure with a virtual patient in a safe and controlled virtual environment. With both training and assessment modes, learners can perform the procedure and assess themselves on their performance.
- Conduct a bimanual exam efficiently
- Use standard technique to obtain depth of uterine cavity
- Use clinically approved method to prepare the insertion tube
- Employ standard technique to efficiently perform the IUD insertion
- Ensure accurate placement of the IUD at the fundus
- Safely remove the insertion tube after IUD placement
- Employ correct steps to cut the string

Core Skills Training
ParaGard IUD Insertion
As a part of this ParaGard IUD Insertion procedure, the user will begin by confirming the patient’s name and date of birth and inform the patient of the procedure and the possible risks and side-effects associated with it. After informing and educating the patient, the learner will conduct a bimanual exam to check the position of the uterus. The learner will then proceed with the insertion procedure which includes stabilizing the cervix, preparing the IUD insertion tube, adjusting the blue flange to the previously measured uterine depth, and finally inserting the IUD. After securing the position of the IUD, the insertion rod is removed completely. The string is cut after removing the tenaculum. The learner will ask the patient if she is feeling okay. The procedure will be complete after disposing of the kit in the bin. All necessary affordances are provided to complete the procedure with efficiency.
Training
With prompts, guidance and affordances learners are hand-held through the process to practice the procedure in a virtual environment with a virtual patient.
- Photorealistic virtual environment
- Physics-based interactions
- Detailed instructions
- Adequate affordances to assist in task completion
Assessment
Test acquired skills to perform the procedures from start to finish without prompts. An incorrect step will take the learner back to the start to start afresh.
- Live scoring
- Instant feedback
- Adequate affordances for efficient performance
- Time tracking to monitor activity completion
