About The Course:

Eight-year-old Emma Carter presents with a 2-day history of sore throat and pain with swallowing. She has a low-grade fever, decreased appetite, and fatigue but continues to drink fluids. A focused pediatric assessment is performed to evaluate the cause of her symptoms and identify findings that may suggest streptococcal pharyngitis or a viral illness.

This VR simulation provides learners with an immersive clinical environment to practice assessing a pediatric patient with a sore throat. Learners progress through patient identification, caregiver communication, vital sign assessment, oral and throat examination, specimen collection, focused history taking, report review, and communication of findings while maintaining patient safety and comfort.

The module includes training and assessment modes to reinforce pediatric communication, procedural sequencing, examination technique, specimen handling, and clinical decision-making.

Learning Objectives:
  • Verify patient identity using two identifiers.
  • Perform appropriate hand hygiene and infection-control practices.
  • Perform a focused pediatric head and neck examination.
  • Review patient reports and relevant clinical information.
  • Explain assessment findings and follow-up recommendations to the caregiver.
  • Maintain patient comfort, safety, privacy, and professionalism.

Core Skills Training

Performing a Pediatric Sore Throat Assessment

The learner introduces themselves to Emma's mother, Elizabeth Carter, verifies the patient's identity, and obtains blood pressure and temperature. The learner then performs a focused throat examination using a tongue depressor and penlight to assess the tonsils for inflammation or swelling.
The learner collects a throat specimen and places it in the appropriate sample tube before reviewing the patient's reports. The learner then obtains a focused history covering symptoms, associated concerns, medical history, medications, allergies, and immunization status.
The learner explains that the findings help determine whether the sore throat may be viral or bacterial and discusses potential testing, such as a rapid strep test or throat culture. Finally, the learner communicates the assessment findings and recommended treatment or follow-up plan to the caregiver.

Training

With prompts, guidance, and affordances, learners are guided through the pediatric sore throat assessment in a virtual clinical environment.

  • Photorealistic pediatric clinical environment
  • Realistic patient and caregiver interaction
  • Physics-based interaction with clinical equipment
  • Guided instructions and visual cues
  • Age-appropriate patient communication
  • Interactive throat examination and specimen collection

Assessment

Learners independently perform the assessment from start to finish without prompts. Incorrect steps require correction before proceeding.

  • Live scoring
  • Instant feedback
  • Sequence and technique validation
  • Patient communication assessment
  • Vital sign and examination validation
  • Specimen handling validation
  • Time tracking
