Pericardiocentesis
The Emergent Pericardiocentesis Simulator will guide the learner through the steps of an emergent pericardiocentesis with the intention of familiarizing electrophysiologists to this important, but rare procedure skillset.
This immersive XR experience provides a realistic simulation of the clinical scenario and increases overall retention by teaching through active participation in a safe, virtual environment. It assesses the operator’s efficiency at several points along the procedure and provides feedback on overall time to complete the skill.
- Identification of appropriate landmarks
- Fluoroscopically obtaining pericardial access
- Placement of drain in the pericardial space
- Rapidly evacuating fluid from the pericardial space

Core Skills Training
Performing Pericardiocentesis
As a part of this Pericardiocentesis simulation, the user will begin by positioning the patient in preparation for the procedure. The learner will then drape the patient, clean the site, and identify the insertion location. This will be followed by inserting the needle while maintaining its trajectory. The learner will go on to insert the wire and pass a dilator over the wire to expand the drainage site. Further in the procedure, the pigtail catheter and stopcock will be used to aspirate the fluid. The procedure will be complete on confirming effusion resolution on ICE. All necessary affordances are provided to complete the procedure with efficiency.
Training
With prompts, guidance and affordances learners are hand-held through the process to practice the procedure in a virtual environment with a virtual patient. Â
- Photorealistic virtual environment Â
- Physics-based interactions Â
- Detailed instructions Â
- Adequate affordances to assist in task completion Â
Assessment
Test acquired skills to perform the procedures from start to finish without prompts. An incorrect step will take the learner back to the start to start afresh. Â
- Live scoring Â
- Instant feedback Â
- Adequate affordances for efficient performance Â
- Time tracking to monitor activity completion Â
