Rapid Blood Transfusion
Richard Mauk, 52-year-old male, is an alcoholic and has been throwing up blood for the past one hour. He has been admitted for an urgent blood transfusion.
This VR simulation for Rapid Blood Transfusion is designed to help healthcare professionals practice performing the procedure of blood transfusion using a Belmont Rapid Infuser. With both training and assessment modes, learners can perform the procedure independently and receive performance feedback.
- Setting up the Belmont Rapid Infuser using standard techniques
- Spiking and priming IV fluids according to established protocols
- Performing two-person blood product verification following standard procedures
- Administering IV fluids and blood products using proper infusion techniques
- Disposing of biohazard waste in compliance with safety guidelines

Performing Rapid Blood Transfusion
As part of the Rapid Blood Transfusion procedure, the learner will begin by confirming the patient’s identity, checking for known allergies, and communicating the risks of the procedure to the patient’s relative while obtaining informed consent. The learner will then gather the necessary equipment, including the Belmont Rapid Infuser, and proceed with setting up the tubing system, spiking and priming IV fluid bags, and connecting the device to the patient. Following proper patient and blood product verification, the learner will program the infuser according to the physician’s orders. Upon completion of the transfusion, the learner will disconnect the tubing and safely dispose of all waste in accordance with biohazard protocols. All essential tools and interactive elements are provided within the simulation to ensure the procedure can be completed accurately and efficiently.
Training
With prompts, guidance and affordances learners are hand-held through the process to practice the procedure in a virtual environment with a virtual patient. Â
- Photorealistic virtual environment Â
- Physics-based interactions Â
- Detailed instructions Â
- Adequate affordances to assist in task completion

Assessment
Test acquired skills to perform the procedures from start to finish without prompts. An incorrect step will take the learner back to the start to start afresh.
- Live scoring Â
- Instant feedback Â
- Adequate affordances for efficient performance Â
- Time tracking to monitor activity completion
