About The Course:

Thirty-year-old Mei-Xia Chen is scheduled for a surgery, and 70-year-old Carlos Martinez has a suspected urinary tract infection. Both cases require a urinalysis, which their physicians have ordered. Chen and Martinez are at the doctor’s examination room for their tests. As the healthcare provider, it is your responsibility to ensure that each urinalysis is performed accurately, efficiently, and under strict hygienic conditions to maintain sample integrity and safeguard patient health.

With both training and assessment modes, learners can perform the procedure and assess themselves on their performance.

Learning Objectives:
  • Preparing the workspace and materials required for urinalysis
  • Identifying the correct patient and verifying the physician’s test order
  • Instructing the patient on proper urine sample collection technique
  • Collecting and labelling the urine specimen following hygiene and safety protocols

Core Skills Training

Urine Midstream Collection - Female

In this simulation, the learner begins by confirming the patient’s identity, introducing themselves, and explaining the midstream urine collection procedure to the female patient. After ensuring privacy and practicing hand hygiene, the learner educates the patient on maintaining hygiene and sterility during the process.
The learner guides the patient on using antiseptic towelettes to cleanse the labial area and on correctly collecting the midstream portion of urine. The procedure concludes with sealing and cleaning the specimen container and performing final hand hygiene.
All necessary affordances are provided to complete the procedure efficiently and safely.

Urine Midstream Collection - Male

In this simulation, the learner begins by confirming the patient’s identity, introducing themselves, and explaining the midstream urine collection procedure to the male patient. After ensuring privacy and performing hand hygiene, the learner educates the patient on maintaining cleanliness and sterility during the process.
The learner instructs the patient on using antiseptic towelettes to cleanse the glans penis appropriately and on collecting the midstream urine sample without contaminating the container. The procedure concludes with securely sealing and cleaning the specimen container and performing final hand hygiene.
All necessary affordances are provided to complete the procedure effectively and in accordance with infection control standards.

Training

With prompts, guidance and affordances learners are hand-held through the process to practice the procedure in a virtual environment with a virtual patient.

  • Photorealistic virtual environment
  • Physics-based interactions
  • Detailed instructions
  • Adequate affordances to assist in task completion

Assessment

Test acquired skills to perform the procedures from start to finish without prompts. An incorrect step will take the learner back to the start to start afresh.

  • Live scoring
  • Instant feedback
  • Adequate affordances for efficient performance
  • Time tracking to monitor activity completion
